Pakistan adopted the sustainable development goals in 2016, as the country’s national development goals. However, even after 6 years of adoption, Pakistan is far behind in its progress. The World Health Organization reports around 40% of children aged five years and younger, suffer from stunting. This level of undernourishment is caused by factors including, a lack of family planning, maternal body mass index, household wealth, community factors, and other facilities.
The modern view on development gives more weight to health and well-being as integral parts of human capability. Instead of mere quantitative measures, better health enables a person to have a better and more productive life. However, Pakistan remains in a quagmire of dormancy when it comes to forward-looking policy-making.
The last Demographic and Health Survey was conducted in 2018, with nothing to show for the impacts of COVID and inflation on these indicators at a national level. At the end of the day, all efforts related to elevating Pakistan in terms of SDGs, require a clear direction. Whether it be nutrition, health, or education.
