Historically, Pakistan’s power sector has often fallen short of meeting a huge demand for electricity. In recent years, the policy has shifted to focus more on LNG imports to fulfill the gap created by depleting natural resources. This is followed by a huge import bill and increasing pressure on consumers. In the past few days or so, major cities have observed power outages that lasted more than 4 hours. In addition to this, fuel adjustments and other tariffs had increased electricity bills country-wide.
However, due to recent international deflation, OGRA has approved a 13% reduction in the price of re-gasified liquified natural gas. Since RLNG forms a great portion of Pakistan’s energy mix, the news translates to consolation for Pakistanis. This also means relaxation in our import bill as the share of gas import has increased two folds over the past three years, from PKR 350 billion to PKR 650 billion.
