As the smog season returns, Lahore was once again ranked as the most polluted city in the world with the Air Quality Index (AQI) rating ranging between 166 and 279 in different areas with a PM2.5 concentration being 8.8 times higher than the WHO annual air quality guideline value.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) while hearing a petition filed by a citizen, sought directions for the provincial government to take steps for controlling the smog in the city.
The experts at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had warned Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) last month about a more than usual dense smog this year in Lahore. However, a common citizen's petition led to a notification today, presented in the Lahore High Court (LHC), which has laid out anti-smog measures while declaring Lahore as a 'calamity-hit city'.
