According to news reports, the Sindh government failed in saving wheat stock due to unmanaged rainwater. Consequently, around 1.6 million tonnes of wheat stock, which was stored in government warehouses in the Larkana division got wasted.
On the other hand, 300,000 tonnes of stored wheat in the Rajanpur and Fazilpur districts of Punjab have also been swept away due to floods, leaving the province on the verge of a wheat flour crisis.
More than 90% of Pakistani households are wheat consumers. The recent floods have destroyed or damaged land that will directly impact wheat harvest this year.
Wheat prices have already surged by almost 30% in the past three weeks and they might hover around PKR 200/Kg in Pakistan in the coming days as predicted by the Chairman of Karachi Wholesalers Grocers Association (KWGA).
